How Often Should You Regrip Golf Clubs? 6 Signs Your Grips Are Worn

Most golfers should regrip their clubs about once a year, or every 40 rounds — Golf Pride’s general guideline. If you play or practise several times a week, you may need to regrip more often; if you only play a handful of rounds a season, your grips can last longer. The real test is how they look and feel, so check them against the six signs below.

Why worn grips cost you shots

Rubber grips break down over time from sweat, sun cream, heat, cold and simple use. As the surface hardens and gets slick, you instinctively squeeze the club tighter to stop it moving. Extra grip pressure creates tension in your hands, wrists and forearms, which makes a smooth, consistent swing harder. Fresh grips let you hold the club lightly and still feel secure.

6 signs your golf grips need replacing

  1. They look shiny or smooth. New grips have a matt, textured surface. A glossy finish means the texture has worn away.
  2. They feel hard. Press your thumbnail into the grip. If it feels stiff rather than slightly soft, the rubber has aged.
  3. Cracks or splits appear, often near the end cap or where your thumbs sit.
  4. Worn patches show where your hands go. Flattened or discoloured spots under your thumbs or fingers mean uneven wear.
  5. The club twists in your hands, especially on longer shots or in damp weather.
  6. You’ve forgotten when you last regripped. If it’s been more than a year or around 40 rounds, they’re probably due.

Can you make grips last longer?

Yes. Wash rubber grips every few rounds with warm water and mild soap, rinse and towel-dry them. This removes the sweat and sun cream that make rubber slick. Avoid leaving clubs in a hot car boot for long periods, as heat speeds up ageing. Cleaning won’t bring back grips that have hardened or cracked, though — at that point it’s time to replace them.

Should you regrip every club at once?

Regripping your whole bag at the same time keeps the feel consistent from driver to wedge, so you’re not switching between new and old grips mid-round. That’s why full-bag grip sets are popular — see our Golf Pride grip sets. Your putter grip wears differently and can be replaced on its own schedule.

FAQs

How long do golf grips last?
Around a year or 40 rounds for most golfers, according to Golf Pride’s general guideline. Frequent players and anyone practising a lot will wear grips out faster.

Do worn grips really affect my swing?
They can. Slick grips make you hold the club tighter, and extra tension in your hands and arms makes a smooth, repeatable swing harder.

Can I just clean old grips instead of replacing them?
Cleaning helps grips that are dirty or slightly slick. It won’t fix grips that have hardened, cracked or worn smooth.
