Golf Grip Sizes Explained: Undersize, Standard, Midsize or Jumbo?

The quickest way to choose a golf grip size is to match it to your glove size: most golfers with a men’s medium to large glove use Standard grips, while a men’s XL or larger glove usually suits Midsize. Smaller hands — including many women and juniors — often suit Undersize, and golfers with very large hands or sore joints may prefer Jumbo. Use that as your starting point, then fine-tune by feel.

The four main grip sizes

SizeUsually suits
UndersizeSmaller hands; many women’s and junior golfers
StandardMost golfers — men’s medium to large glove
MidsizeLarger hands — men’s XL glove or larger
Jumbo / oversizeVery large hands, or golfers who want minimal grip pressure

Exact dimensions vary by manufacturer and model, so always check the size listed on the grip itself.

What happens if your grips are the wrong size?

  • Too thin: your fingers dig into your palm and your hands can become overactive through impact, which some golfers find leads to a closed clubface and pulled or hooked shots.
  • Too thick: it can be harder to release the club fully, which some golfers find leaves the face open and shots drifting right (for a right-hander).

Grip size is only one factor in ball flight, so treat these as tendencies rather than rules. Comfort and a relaxed hold matter most.

A simple fit check

Hold a club in your normal top-hand (left hand for right-handed golfers) grip. As a common rule of thumb, the tips of your middle and ring fingers should just touch the pad at the base of your thumb. If they dig in, the grip may be too thin; if there’s a gap, it may be too thick.

Fine-tuning with build-up tape

If a size feels nearly right but slightly thin, extra wraps of grip tape under the grip make it a little thicker. Golfers often add more tape under the lower-hand section only. This is easy to do when you regrip — see our guide to regripping golf clubs at home.

Arthritis and sore hands

Many golfers with arthritis or stiff hands find a larger grip — midsize or jumbo — more comfortable, because it takes less effort to close the hands around the club and helps reduce grip pressure.

FAQs

What grip size do most golfers use?
Standard. Most golfers with a men’s medium to large glove fit standard grips.

Should my putter grip be the same size?
No. Putter grips are a separate category with their own shapes and sizes, chosen mainly for feel and stroke style.

Can I mix grip sizes in my bag?
You can, but most golfers keep the same size across woods, hybrids and irons so the feel stays consistent.
